All-Wheel Drive Systems
DEALERSHIP QUALITY AT A FRACTION OF THE COST
All-Wheel Drive Systems
All-wheel drive systems are similar to 4WD. They both provide power to all four wheels simultaneously. However, all-wheel drive systems operate full time whereas 4WD requires the driver to select between 2WD and AWD. Full-time operation adds safety as the AWD system is always engaged to assist with any unexpected loss of traction. AWD gives you confidence and better control in rain, snow or rough terrain. But the added complexity means that these systems need additional maintenance to keep them working without incurring expensive repair bills.
Maintenance
AWD systems provide added safety, but they also add complexity to both the mechanical and electronic systems in your car. These systems contain differentials and transfer cases with complex mechanical components. The fluids in these units should be changed between 30k and 60k miles depending on the manufacturer. Like all lubricating fluids, they break down from heat, moisture and use so keeping fresh fluid is essential to longevity. AWD systems also utilize additional axles and constant-velocity (CV) joints. These transfer power to the wheels and need to be inspected regularly for wear. CV joints are covered with boots that retain grease and keep out debris. Torn CV boots are easy to repair and should be fixed right away before damage occurs to the CV joint and axle. A front-axle failure on an AWD car can be dangerous and expensive to repair.
Problems
Some symptoms that indicate your AWD system needs inspection are excessive noise especially when turning or switching between gears, hard turning, unusual vibrations, a dash warning light or fluid leaks.
