Common Car Wiper Problems and How to Solve Them

Windshield wipers are the unsung heroes of your vehicle. They are designed to provide visibility in rainy or extreme weather conditions we face here in Fort Collins, Colorado. If they are not in proper condition, collision is the likely result. Therefore, be aware of these wiper problems, their causes, and how to solve them.

Noisy Wipers

When car wipers start squeaking and chattering, it is likely because of dirt or debris on the windshield glass or on the blades themselves. It is also not unusual for wipers to squeak when there is little to no rain. Grab a bucket of soapy water and a sponge and clean off as much dirt from the windscreen and blades as possible.

If the noise persists, check the rubber on the wiper blades for wear and tear. If the rubber is still flexible and none of the parts of the wiper are damaged, it might be a mechanical problem. Request an inspection from an auto shop professional.

Slow Wipers

Wipers can be slowed down by a dirty, clogged, or old wiper motor. If this is the case, it is not advisable to try to fix it yourself. Please have a mechanic assess the motor and make necessary repairs.

Be careful not to confuse slow wipers with unsynchronized ones. While the former needs to be inspected by a professional, wipers that are off-rhythm might be the result of dirt and grime buildup on the blades or windshield, which can be easily cleaned off.

Uneven Wiping

If your wipers clear some areas and not others, the pressure of the blade on the surface might not be enough. This is a common problem with car wipers that are low quality. Given the importance of wipers to your safety, consider investing in a better quality brand.

Streaking Wipers

Another problem that can be solved by upgrading to good-quality wipers is streaking. There are types of wipers available that are designed to ensure that wiping is streak-free. In some cases, however, streaking can be caused by wear and tear in the rubber, linking mechanism, or the arm of a wiper. If you are unsure of the cause, consult a mechanic.

Smearing Wipers

Because there are several reasons why your wipers are smearing water, which range from practical to mechanical, it is a good idea to try a few solutions one by one until you get to the source.

First, check if the rubber on the blades is in good condition. If your blades look worn, this might be the problem and can be solved by replacing them. If the wiper condition is not the problem, clean both the blades and the windscreen of any dirt with soap and water.

Test wiper function by running water from a hose from the roof of your car. If the water still smears, visit an auto shop and ask a pro to check the wiper fluid. If this is not the issue, the expert should then be able to find the real source of the problem.

Wipers Won't Stop

Wipers have an electrical circuit that connects them to the motor. A problem with electrical components can cause wipers to keep going and not respond to control switches. This is an issue that should be handled by a professional.

Wipers Won't Work

Your car's electrical system can also cause wipers to do the opposite and not work at all. Oftentimes, when there is too much power on the circuit, it can blow a fuse. Unfortunately, electrical car problems do not have a quick fix and need to be looked over by an auto repair expert.

Surprisingly, most wiper problems can be resolved by simply replacing or cleaning the blades and windshield regularly. However, if this solution does not improve the performance of your wipers, the car needs to be taken to a repair shop as soon as possible.
