Steering & Suspension
WE WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MAKES YOUR CAR WORK AND TAKE THE MYSTERY OUT OF REPAIRS
Suspension
Your car’s suspension system is very important because it is what keeps your tires in contact with the road. Your suspension includes the struts or shocks, springs, control arms, bushings, ball joints, tie rods and more. When these parts become worn, they reduce your ability to hold the road. The result is increased stopping distance and decreased traction. This can add up to a serious safety issue if left unchecked which is why our trained technicians inspect all these components and more every time your vehicle is in for service.
Your suspension wears over time so it can be hard to notice a change. If you are experiencing increased front-end dive under braking, excessive bouncing over uneven road surfaces or excessive body roll or vibration, any of these could point to worn-out suspension items. Your car’s suspension contains a number of rubber bushings that will deteriorate and crack with age. The large temperature swings and road deicing chemicals that we have in Colorado are hard on rubber bushings. Struts and shock absorbers contain hydraulic fluid. They are commonly overlooked if they are not leaking externally, but the interior parts can be worn out before any external leaks ever develop. Most manufacturers recommend replacing shocks around 60k miles. This will help keep your car in contact with the road and give you shorter, safer stopping.
Another sign of suspension wear is any type of clicking noise when hitting bumps. This normally indicates a loose or failed component. These types of noises can come from sway-bar bushings and end links, struts and shocks or their mounts. We are happy to send one of our service professionals on a ride with you to listen to any noises you may have questions about.
Alignment
Wheel alignment means that your tires are all pointing in the proper direction. This is important because when the tires are properly aligned, they turn freely. When out of alignment, your tires will scrub across the road instead of rolling freely. Rough roads, bumping a curb or just normal use can cause the wheels to become out of alignment. If your vehicle pulls to one side, that is a sign that the alignment should be checked. Driving with an alignment problem will cause premature tire wear and lower your gas mileage.
Steering
The steering system uses a belt-driven power steering pump located on the engine to pump high- pressure fluid into the steering rack so that the steering wheel turns easily. This fluid degrades over time and should be flushed every 30k miles or two years to increase the life of the system.
At every service we check the condition of the belt and the fluid level and note any leaks in the system. Running the system low on fluid can quickly damage the power steering pump leading to an expensive repair. If you hear unusual noise when you turn the steering wheel, this indicates a slipping belt or a low fluid level. Call or stop by so our technician can sort out the problem before it becomes an expensive repair.
